Aerial yoga, sometime known as anti-gravity yoga, started gaining popularity about 10 years ago. Since then it has become one of the hottest fitness classes across the globe. Aerial yoga combines poses and stretches while using a silk hammock to support your body. It lets you attempt stretches, some of which are upside down like a bat. It’s a bit like being a circus acrobat.
The height adjustable hammocks support approximately 900 kilograms, so you’re not at any risk of having them break while you’re exercising. It offers many of the same benefits as regular yoga, but the hammocks provide a greater range of movement.
Aerial yoga is more challenging than traditional yoga and therefore requires more focus. Generally for beginners, fear of face planting and mastering each pose requires a great deal of concentration.
Your core muscles are required to be constantly engaged to balance and stabilise yourself during each pose. Strong core muscles are essential to daily functional activities, good posture and avoid back problems.
Aerial yoga is a good stress reliever. It can be quite relaxing having a hammock support your weight. Not to mention the buzz you get afterwards from completing a class can be described as euphoric, which is why people keep going back for more.
Learn from a trained aerial yoga instructor, so you learn how to correctly execute the each pose to avoid injury. Hanging upside does have its health risks but a trained instructor won’t push these limits. It’s also advisable not to do aerial yoga alone, particularly if you are a beginner.
