If you’re about to compete in your first run or half marathon, preparation is everything. Don’t leave it until the last minute to start thinking about what to put in your race pack. Planning ahead will help you feel more prepared.
There’s nothing worse than having to walk around in sweaty race gear, so it’s important to ensure you have a change of clothes. You’re going to want to feel comfortable, so make sure you’ve got your favourite trackpants, a warm jacket or sweatshirt in the off chance it’s raining on the day of the race. Don’t forget a change of socks, and your favourite pair of shoes. After putting your body under stress, you may experience feeling cold, even if the sun is out.
After the race, if you don’t have an entourage of family or friends to drive you home or back to wherever you are staying, consider how you are going to get home. If you’re planning on walking back to your base, it may pay to keep your race pack light. Who wants to lug a heavy pack around, especially after finishing a long distance run? You may also want to pack an extra water bottle and a few snacks t boost your energy once you finish the race.
If you don’t have a family member to keep a watch over your belonging, keep your valuables on your person, rather than leave them unattended. Items such as medication, driver’s licence, phone can be kept in a small waist pack that you take with you.
Action wipes are a great way to ensure your armpits don’t reek to high heavens, especially if you’re hanging around for the after race presentations and plan to check out the cool down zone. A small gym towel will also help you clean up, so you can go straight from the race to a celebratory breakfast with your friends and family waiting at the finish line.
