A holistic approach to health includes not only eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise, but also taking care of your mental well-being. Whether that means getting enough sleep or simply taking time out to regroup and get some R ‘n’ R.

It’s so easy to fill up the weekend with chores and errands that can’t be done during the week, and get so busy that by the time Monday rolls around you realise you never got a break. So make sure this weekend you deliberately set aside some me time to chill out and catch up on some well-deserved rest. If you need more than a Netflix binge to help reset, we have some great apps that encourage rest, relaxation and even a reboot.

Pzizz

De-stress and wake up re-energised after the best sleep of your life. Pzizz promises to send you to sleep at the push of a button, which is great for insomniacs or those who have been burning the candle at both ends. Applying psychoacoustics; a branch of psychology that explores sound perception and its physiological effects, each part of the sleep cycle has a specially developed sound sequence for maximum effect. Combining a mix of music, sound effects, and soothing voiceovers, you can set the session for any length of time and with an extensive number of possible combinations, you’ll never hear the same sequence twice.

It is available for iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

Happify

With a name like Happify, it’s hard to resist giving it a whirl. Grounded in the fields of positive psychology, mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy, Happify aims to help you find emotional fulfilment and improve your ability to practice the five ‘essential’ skills of happiness – the ability to savour, thank, aspire, give and empathise. After answering a few questions, the app measures your current state of happiness and wellbeing then provides tasks, games, and meditations to help improve your score.

It is available for iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

Insight Timer

Featuring more than 4000 guided meditations from over 1000 teachers, Insight Timer covers all manner of meditations from mindfulness to walking and prayer to breathing. The extensive playlists cover topics such as mindful eating, stress, emotional balance and inner peace, and includes talks and podcasts. The app tries to create a sense of community by announcing the number of users mediating at any given time and it’s also possible to see if there is anyone meditating nearby. You can create a timed meditation sequence using the ambient sounds and interval bell features if you are after a quiet experience.

It is available for iOS and Android and can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

Recolor

Delve in to your creative side and let stress and anxiety drip away as your colourful creation unfolds. Recolor is the digital version of colouring in books for adults. With over 1500 designs to choose from, and new additions every day, it’s as simple as selecting an image, and adding colour from the extensive colour palette. The endless designs are arranged by complexity (beginner to expert), and into themed chapters such as patterns, animals, Mandalas, scenery and pop art.
