If you find your enthusiasm for lacing up your running shoes is waning, it may be time to change things ups. There’s nothing worse than doing the same old exercise routine, day in and day out, so we’ve compiled a list of ideas to make your next run seem more fun.

  1. Pretend you are being chased
With a little imagination you can transform in Jason Bourne and be on the run from baddies. Sprint like your life depends on it, darting through parks, being on the lookout for double agents.
  2. Film your run
Strap on an action camera and map your run on video. On completion, speed it up, add your favourite music and post to your favourite social media site.
  3. Listen to audiobooks
Struggle to get the time to read? Why not combine running with an audiobook. Listen to a best-seller or a sporting biography for inspiration.
  4. Create the ultimate running playlist
Make a playlist of all your favourite tunes and lose yourself in the music.
  5. Download your favourite podcasts
What better time to catch up on your favourite podcasts than while you’re pounding the streets. Learn to speak Spanish or laugh your head off with the very latest from Hamish & Andy.
  6. Try Fartlek training
Fartlek is Swedish for speed play. This is where you vary your intervals of speed. You may decide to sprint until you pass a telegraph pole and then reduce your pace until you a car drives past.
  7. Measure your steps
Use a Fitbit flex to track your activity, distance and time and then attempt to beat your personal records.
  8. Change the scenery
If you’re used to running through the streets of your neighbourhood, change it up and go off-road. Get a pair of trail running shoes with good sole traction for grip.
  9. Enter a fun run
Don’t just settle for a boring old 5km jog, enter a fun run with a theme. Sign up for a mud run, colour run or Santa run.
  10. Get a running buddy
Someone to run with will keep you honest, especially for during those times where you simply can’t be bothered and look for an excuses not to exercise.
