Why badminton is a great sport to take up
Easy to learn, no matter how old you are, badminton is a fun indoor court sport which can be played all year round – rain, hail or shine.
All you need to start is a racquet, non-marking shoes, a shuttlecock, and a small fee to join a local club or court hire.
Badminton is played either in singles or doubles (requiring four players). Each match starts with a coin toss or a short rally to determine who serves first. The winner is determined by the first team to reach 21 points, with three sets to a match. A point is awarded each time the shuttlecock clears the net and lands within the boundary lines.
While the concept and equipment of badminton are relatively simple, the health benefits are immeasurable – weight loss, greater agility, improved fitness and coordination.
Outdoor badminton is gaining popularity during the summer months with nets erected in backyards or at the beach for casual games. Playing outside can be frustrating with slight wind gusts affecting the direction of the shuttlecock, but the erratic play of the shuttle will encourage a quicker gameplay with faster reactions and more running throughout the game needed. This level of play can burn anywhere from 400 to 1,000 calories per hour, making it an excellent cardiovascular workout.
