Queensland Firebirds mainstay Kim Ravaillion is one of the most well-conditioned athletes in netball today. She attributes her ongoing success at both domestic and international level to her well-organised fitness regime.

After suffering an early setback in her career when not making the NSW state junior netball squad, Kim quickly realised what she needed to improve.

‘That flicked a switch in me which drove home the importance of focusing on the extras behind the scene without anyone seeing how hard I was working,’ she said.

‘I wasn’t strong enough or fit enough and I didn’t possess enough strength in my core or have enough balance, so I made sure I completed a lot of gym and strengthening sessions as well as a lot of core work that I still do today.’

The Australian Diamond acknowledges the importance of specialised fitness to enhancing her game.

‘I did a lot of running sessions to get my fitness up,’ she said. ‘I’ve since learned to stop the running and instead focus on specific fitness work more suited to my position. This means more interval running; not so much long distances, just more sprinting and power sessions,’

While running and maintaining her fitness is key to her game, Kim also outlays the importance of the Firebirds’ gym sessions.

‘Our gym sessions are all about power and animal movement and pushing ourselves to the limit, whether it be bench presses or squatting,’ Kim said.

‘It’s all about working under fatigue while also making sure we’re fresh again by the time game day comes around.’
